It is really quite simple, music notation and understanding the letter names of notes is necessary to being able to understand music theory. To think that anyone could learn the true concepts and principles of music as expressed in the study called "Theory Of Music", requires the knowledge and awareness of the names of notes and how they appear on the music staff. The names of notes and the way they are written on the staff is a symbolic representation of sound in all music, "Tab" is not... it is only a location on guitar of positions of notes. Tablature is limited to the guitar, but also the symbols that represent sound in music notation express relationships of sounds to each other as do other symbols in fields such as math and language, and neither of these subjects would be able to be understood fully without knowing the actual appearance of the numbers 1-9, or the letters of an alphabet. The idea that one can study music theory on guitar with "Tab", is only one more step in the misunderstanding of guitar learning that is out there today, separating the guitarist more and more from the regular music world.
