There is a definite problem in learning guitar today. While you would think that with all the people interested in learning to play guitar, you might also believe there would be an increase in quality learning materials. Well, as a professional guitarist and teacher of the instrument I have noticed that much of the published guitar books and also videos are packed full of ridiculous incorrect technique and information. Unfortunately, although interest has increased in guitar to an all time high... the awareness of what "REAL" guitar playing is and how important good technique is on the decline. The guitar playing that most people see on TV and in performances in general has decreased in complexity because of current music styles, and therefore what people assume what playing the guitar is all about has decreased. The simplicity of the pop music field has given people the idea that this is all there is. So the publishers are creating books that comply with and stylize the materials to match what the artists do. Unfortunately that is not realistic for the learning of anything, it limits the development to a low level instead of offering growth and abilities to higher and greater skill. There is no area of study that deliberately tries to keep individuals down, it is the basic intent of all systems of learning to present increasing levels of skill.
To give some examples, take for instance math. You first learn simple addition, subtraction etc., and then as years go on discover algebra, geometry, calculus etc.. Or, consider the martial arts... with the acquiring of different levels of development. To use the most significant example, think about life on earth itself. Development is toward greater complexity, not lesser. We have built our entire educational system on this premise, and even acknowledge our growth by level and grade, from first grade to twelfth... and on into higher education with similar evaluation. In any case, the guitar, has already been there. The guitar has achieved the higher levels of development already over the centuries, and so to see it being played at what I often refer to as the kindergarten level is a shock. Therefore is it any wonder that the books and other materials being published is going down hill rather than up. All that can be said is too bad for the people, and too bad for those who think they are playing it, it is a most interesting delusion.
